Graffiti with a Cause

Three Greenpeace graffiti artists have been charged after painting REEF IN DANGER on the side of a coal carrier in the boom mining port of Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

A visit by officials from the UN’s environmental arm UNESCO is due in ten days’ time.

The tagging reflects local concern about the threat to the Great Barrier Reef posed by the gas and coal boom that is driving massive port expansion along this very vulnerable coast.

Police said they had charged the trio with wilful damage and possession of graffiti instruments.

Greenpeace climate and energy campaigner Julien Vincent was on one of the two inflatable boats used to target the coal carrier.

“We need a constant reminder that the reef is in so much danger from the massive, out-of-control boom,” he stated.
